Katharine Hepburn’s Rose Sayer is the original female action hero. Caught behind enemy lines in the Belgian Congo at the height of WWI, not only does Rose succeed at going down a dangerous river to blow up a German battleship, but she also achieves a romantic relationship between equals with her companion Charlie Allnut that liberates her from her constraining religious beliefs. There is much to learn from this film.
