Welcome to my creative process blog! Lately, students and clients have said they love it when I share glimpses of my own methods as a writer. So I have turned on my camera to capture a bit of what I do when I’m alone with my creative struggles. This is a story I started writing just for fun with few expectations of it going anywhere, but it has been getting such a positive response (including winning an award!) that I am now laboring on a third draft in earnest. Here’s the log line: “The absolutely true and correct story of the origin of Robin Hood: Each time Lady Marian, the daughter of Norman nobility, steals from the king to feed the starving peasants, Sir Robert, a brawling Saxon vassal, is outraged to learn he has been blamed, until . . . she finally wins him over to her cause.”

    Doing research to support your story can feel like you’re not making much concrete progress. But it all goes into your unconscious and informs your creative decisions going forward. I didn’t think I had much to report from last week until I looked over my various scribbles and found a nice little scene fragment that read the full article.

    At the urging of my students, I am sharing my creative process on the third draft of my retelling of the Robin Hood story from Marian’s point of view. This week I had to figure out how to introduce Friar Tuck into the action and discovered that the answer was right in front of me. read the full article.
